Workers are appointed by the local committee and typically serve under the direction of the chaplain they are assisting. They assist chaplains by serving as readers, ushers or musicians, or as Sunday School teachers in juvenile facilities. They must be members of The Mother Church and a branch church or society. Any other qualifications are left to the discretion of the local committee. Workers do not conduct one-to-one interviews but refer individuals to the chaplain. They may hand out literature or play any appropriate music while inmates wait to speak with the chaplain.

Since workers have no confidentiality privileges on the same basis as practitioner/patient, all inquiries from an inmate must be referred to the chaplain. This point is crucial for the protection of the workers, the inmates, and the entire Christian Science institutional program
